In our congregation: Helmut B

As soon as lockdown ended and face-to-face worship began again at Crossroads, I noticed that Helmut Bohnke is a regular attender on Sunday mornings.
Helmut’s a person of my generation; born 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War in Germany, in Braunschweig. “My father was a machine gunner in the army of the Reich, conscripted for Hitler’s war in Russia. Captured by the Russians, my father survived five years of prison camps in Siberia, and returned a very malnourished and sick man”.

“My mother along with all the women of Germany was put to work making bullets and guns. My three older sisters cared for me on the fourth floor play area of our government housing apartment. Like many children deprived of school during the war, I started school afterwards at age 8 in a class of 4-year-olds, and I hated it.”
On leaving school, Helmut completed apprenticeship as a cabinet maker and French polisher.
Migrating to Australia, Helmut got work as a sprinkler fitter with Wormalds. He married Margaret Loretta in 1962; they had three sons and their one daughter Barbara is now living in Wyndham Vale. Margaret died of heart condition in the year 2000. They lived for many years in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. Here in Wyndham Vale, Helmut makes model sailing ships. He showed me a photo of his model flagship of the Spanish Armada in 1588.
“In Wagga Wagga I went to church every Sunday, but I didn’t like the preaching,“ says Helmut. “I am pleased to make friends at the Uniting Church in Werribee.”
Our Uniting Church community is enriched by persons from many nations of the earth. Welcome, Helmut! (NT)

A prayer during this continuing pandemic

Oh dear God,
This keeps going. It ends, it spirals, it ends, something new is revealed.
People are welcomed, people are refused. We travel, we cancel.
We hope, hope is dashed, we hope, we dig for will-power.
How can we find you in the midst of all of this?
Oh dear God, we don’t have to search.
In the midst is where you always have been and are still.
We summon our stretched energy to praise you.
Give us grace beyond our experience and belief to experience energy and new hope.
In this Christmas time, we pray for ourselves and each other to live these days as well as we can, no matter their shape.
We praise you and commit to Hope. Amen
