COMMUNITY NEWS FOR TODAY & THE COMING WEEK

Refugee Week 18–24 June

What does it mean to be free?

To live without the fear of war, to have your basic human rights upheld, to live in equality and without the fear of persecution are just some of the examples of what freedom can entail. Every day millions of people across the world embark on dangerous journeys for the sole purpose of finding safety and freedom. From Australia to nations across the globe, settling into a new environment after experiencing the perils of a refugee’s journey can also provide the opportunity to live, to love and to dream.
Check out the website for Refugee Week for resources and events that will showcase the journey of finding freedom, whether it be through a new home, a new career, finding love or friendships. Let us show compassion and celebrate the resilience that makes up parts of our wider community. For freedom should not be an ask, it should be a way of life. https://www.refugeecouncil.org.au

Lindsay wanted to go to sea; in 1944 he began as a deck boy with the famous sailing ship “Pamir,” on voyages to Vancouver and San Francisco.

Born in 1927 at Gore, New Zealand, near Invercargill, Lindsay’s secondary education was at Cathedral Grammar School, Christchurch.
Lindsay wanted to go to sea; in 1944 he began as a deck boy with the famous sailing ship “Pamir,” on voyages to Vancouver and San Francisco.
Once the Pamir was hit by a tropical cyclone of hurricane strength, south of Tonga. “The sails were ripped to shreds,” says Lindsay.
Next, as an Able Seaman, Lindsay worked on a tramp steamer “Kairanga”, from Adelaide to Port Kembla, “We nearly lost her, fully loaded, to three big ‘uns (swells)”. Then he joined an island-hopping motor vessel, from Auckland to Samoa, Tonga and Fiji.
With the Union Steamship Company, Lindsay made trips from New Zealand to Singapore, Colombo, Calcutta and Surabaya. He gained his master’s ticket in 1954.
Lindsay and Shirley married in 1955; they had three children, and Lindsay began 18 years’ work as a pilot and deputy Harbour Master guiding ships in and out of Lyttleton, the port of Christchurch.
Then came 12 years with the Australian National Line as Chief Mate: to Osaka and Yokohama, with bulk coal, gypsum and wheat; he carried iron ore from Port Hedland-Newcastle, and sugar from Queensland to Yarraville.
Lindsay retired in 1986 with Shirley in Sydney until their move to Werribee. From 2015-2022, Heathglen Retirement Village was their home.
In his retirement Lindsay made beautiful model sailing vessels and warships. He now resides in Glendale Aged Care Facility. (NT)

Successful Interfaith Dinner

300 people enjoyed an Indian-style meal, good company and entertainment at the Annual Multi-Faith Dinner at the Encore Centre, Hoppers Crossing recently. In a time when fringe groups practise racism and bigotry, it’s good to see widespread community support for Wyndham’s key organization promoting respect and understanding for the world faiths represented in this growing city.
Uniting Church people attending included Rev Faama L, Node M, Lorna H, Beverley C, Nancy McE, Neil and Marg T, and Rev. Mark D retired UC minister now Chairperson of Merri-Bek (formerly City of Moreland) Interfaith Network.
Local communities of the world faiths present included Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islam, Sikh and Mormon.
Bev C said “Highlights for me were meeting with the guest at our table Ms Erum A, who is a Muslim from Pakistan, active in leadership of WIN. And when the Peace Choir sang the world premiere of Jonathan W song “Our world in Wyndham” a young African-Australian John M said a touching poetic piece about the journey to his new adopted homeland.”
Co-ordinator Laurence G says: “Anyone is welcome to the regular monthly meetings of WIN at 6.30–8 pm at Wayaperri House, Duncans Road, Werribee.” For information, contact Laurence. (NT)
