We acknowledge the original custodians, the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin alliance, of the land on which our buildings of worship stand and on which we gather.

COMMUNITY NEWS FOR TODAY & THE COMING WEEK

Relay for Life

Relay For Life is a fun and moving experience that raises vital funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services.
Relay is a chance for the Wyndham community and Crossroads UC to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, those going through a cancer experience and their carers to honour and remember loved ones lost and to raise money to help save more lives.
Crossroads UC has been involved in Relay since 2011, and we welcome Hoppers Crossing UC to come along and join the Crossroads people. The Wyndham Relay is on Saturday 25th March 2023 and starts at 11am through to 11pm at the Victoria University Sporting Complex in Hoppers Lane, Werribee. You can join the team and/or sponsor us via our Relay web page –
https://www.relayforlife.org.au/fundraisers/CrossroadsUnitingChurch1343/wyndham-2023
or just come along on the day to urge us on. Contact Roland G or Lauren D.

State Research Farm 110 years

People of the State Research Farm (SRF) in Werribee recently celebrated 110 years of scientific agricultural work; a significant contribution to Australia’s economy.
Mary D was a staff member at the Cereal Laboratory (also called the Plant Breeding Lab) in the 1950s. She says: “Over 250 former staff and families recently came together for a lunch at Wyndham Cultural Centre; we saw a film and received a booklet Out on the Farm, telling our story.” Blair and Mary D have written brief memoirs, along with thirty other folk.

All of Blair’s working life was at the Gilbert Chandler Institute of Dairy Technology, from 1954–1988. His memoir explains that the institute provided teaching, research and development of fermentation science, protein science, butter and milkfat technology, quality assurance, and milking systems.

The State Research Farm, on 2167 acres, one mile from Werribee township, was established by a far-sighted Victorian government in 1912 to boost Victoria’s agricultural production and livestock husbandry through research and experimentation.

The SRF included a community of workers and their families living on site, forming a small village. Core buildings of the SRF included the office, fodder shed, silos, laboratories, dairy, stables, carpenter’s shop, grain storage and shearing shed. A wide range of activities included the Dairy Technology School and poultry research.
People of the SRF made an important contribution to the life of the Werribee community: schools and school councils, football and cricket clubs and retail employment. (NT)
