COMMUNITY NEWS FOR TODAY & THE COMING WEEK

Relay for Life

Relay For Life is a fun and moving experience that raises vital funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services.
Relay is a chance for the Wyndham community and Crossroads UC to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, those going through a cancer experience and their carers to honour and remember loved ones lost and to raise money to help save more lives.
Crossroads UC has been involved in Relay since 2011, and we welcome Hoppers Crossing UC to come along and join the Crossroads people. The Wyndham Relay is on Saturday 25th March 2023 and starts at 11am through to 11pm at the Victoria University Sporting Complex in Hoppers Lane, Werribee. You can join the team and/or sponsor us via our Relay web page –
https://www.relayforlife.org.au/fundraisers/CrossroadsUnitingChurch1343/wyndham-2023
or just come along on the day to urge us on. Contact Roland G or Lauren D.

Introducing Bob D

Bob (pictured) is a regular member of Hoppers Crossing congregation; his passions extend to sports, his 14 y.o. Kelpie rescue dog Renn, and his work.
Bob grew up in Port Melbourne and attended Sunday School at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Bay Street. He was a student at South Melbourne Technical School, and became a carpentry and joinery apprentice with the Port of Melbourne Authority, building and maintaining offices. After a redundancy package at the Port Authority he worked at Reeds books in Port Melbourne for 14 years, becoming a team leader.

Bob still loves the Port Melbourne Cricket Club, where he is honorary barman, and he enjoys Port Melbourne VFL Football Club games.
Bob says: “I regularly take part in Wynfit running group programs. I came fourth in the cross-country run at South Melbourne Tech. Middle distance is my choice. My best run is 5 kilometres in 27 minutes, on a regular Wyndham Vale Saturday morning Run in President’s Park. I’m now 69, so I won’t make that time again!”
“My wife Heather (T) and I were married at St Luke’s Methodist Church, Werribee, where Office Works now stands. We settled in our home in Wyndham Vale. Sadly Heather died 10 years ago,” says Bob.
“After losing Heather, I found I needed something. Firstly I tried a nearby church, which criticised others; then I found Hoppers Crossing congregation, where Rev. Fa’ama and the people made me feel welcome. I was helping Fiona at the Playdate Café. Now at Crossroads, I feel positive about the future of our two congregations; let’s be as one.”
Bob says: “I find fulfilling work as a School Crossing supervisor, at the Woodville Primary School, Hoppers Crossing. I’d like to see speed cameras installed at all school crossings.” (NT)
